Life is a journey. This journey will take many twists and turns.

It can be challenging, overwhelming and hard to navigate and negotiate some or all of the time. This is where I can come in……..

ABOUT ME

Hello! My name is Hannah. I am a qualified and experienced psychotherapeutic counsellor. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work within their ethical framework.

Investing in a working relationship with me can allow you to explore your emotions and feelings in a safe, confidential, open and welcoming space. I take a person-centred approach in my counselling sessions. This means I treat you as the expert on your life and work with you to reflect upon and give understanding to these experiences. I can support you in trying to find ways of responding to those twists and turns in your journey.

My previous work background before counselling has involved working with children and young people in an educational setting, including those on the autistic spectrum. I also have over fifteen years experience of working with adults in the NHS.

Growth occurs when individuals confront problems, struggle to master them, and through that
struggle develop new aspects of their skills, capacities, views about life. ~ Carl Rogers

What is counselling?

Counselling is where a trained counsellor creates a safe, non-judgmental and confidential environment to allow you, as the client, to talk about their worries, concerns or what they are experiencing. A counsellor’s role is not to advise but to aid you in exploring yourself in your thoughts and behaviours to create a better understanding of yourself. The relationship between a  counsellor and the client is paramount to allow the work to happen.

Counselling isn’t about telling you what to do or to give advice, but it can help you uncover where any difficulties may stem from and help you find ways to cope or reconcile those difficulties.

Expressing and processing feelings and making sense of them may help you to create different ways of looking at yourself, others and the world around you. These new meanings will help you make conscious and rational decisions about what you do and don’t want, and what should be done about it.

What happens in counselling?

Different types of counselling are available depending on what you want as a client. I am a trained psychotherapeutic counsellor, which means my primary therapy is a humanistic person-centred approach, which means the client is the expert on themselves. The sessions are used to create growth for the client and get to know more about themselves during and after counselling. Being a psychotherapeutic counsellor, I work integrative using several therapeutic approaches.

A session typically is what the client wants to bring to the session as, ultimately, it is about them. A counsellor will aid with this, but if the client struggles to find something to talk about, the counsellor will initiate a more general discussion which could lead to anything.

How to get the most out of counselling?

This comes back to what I previously said the relationship between the client and the counsellor is paramount. If clients feel safe, they are more likely, to be honest, forthcoming and willing to share their thoughts.
